Making it in Esports: Team Empire Co-Owner, Sergey Nevodnichiy

This article is part of Gamer One’s new Making it in Esports series which interviews top industry team owners to learn more about their journey and to share the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

The following is a recent interview we had with Sergey Nevodnichiy, CEO and co-owner of Team Empire.

Sergey Nevodnichiy1. What was your journey like that eventually led to owning your own team?

SN: I have loved computer games since I was 6. It was PC-XT with Digger, Cat, and games like that. I was working in many different industries but always loved games. More than 10 years ago, my partner and I decided that was time to do something relevant for competitive gaming (there was no such word like esports) and started to hire guys to play in our team. Team Empire participated in many titles from Dota2 to Rainbow Six:Siege. We were the first CIS team who hired South Korean Starcraft II player – Violet and he won a lot of titles back in 2010-2011. We made a great team and very proud of what we created.

2. What’s an average workday look like for you?

SN: I would say it is a regular day in the office because esports organizations today is a business and not just fun. Of course, we turn on streams and cheer for our guys when one of our rosters is playing.

3. What’s the most challenging part about owning your own team?

SN: To find a balance between sustainability and growth. Esports market is growing really fast and you have to find a good balance to maintain esports org as a business.

4. What advice would you have for aspiring professional gamers?

SN: Remember why we are all here – to enjoy competition and to have fun.

5. What excites you most about the future of the esports industry?

SN: The possibilities that esports gives to all market players. The chance for everyone to be a part of the esports world.
