Making it in Esports: beastcoast CEO, Grant Zinn

This article is part of Gamer One’s new Making it in Esports series which interviews top industry team owners to learn more about their journey and to share the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

The following is a recent interview we had with Grant Zinn, CEO of beastcoast.

Grant Zinn

1. What was your journey like that eventually led to owning your own team?

GZ: I’ve been a longtime fan and participant in the esports space, and before I started Beastcoast I worked a ton of different jobs esports industry outside my normal career which was in marketing and production. I started beastcoast because I thought that other teams out there were doing a bad job and I could do a better one.

2. What’s an average workday look like for you?

GZ: My average workday can involve anything from doing financial spreadsheets to scouting rosters and players in new and exciting titles. Every day offers something unique and unexpected, which is one of the great things about running your own team.

3. What’s the most challenging part about owning your own team?

GZ: The most challenging part about owning my own team is quelling my competitive side. I want to win everything all the time, and when you run a team it’s important to understand that winning as a company is more important than winning any one singular event.

4. What advice would you have for aspiring professional gamers?

GZ: Be prepared to work harder than everyone else, and don’t bank on any one individual thing, and definitely don’t quit your day job. The only reason I was able to start Beastcoast is because I had a career outside of esports that gave me the experience needed to start the team.

5. What excites you most about the future of the esports industry?

GZ: The fans. There are so many options and opportunities out there that didn’t exist when I was coming up in the space. As esports continues to grow, the people who will be driving this industry forward will be the people who care about it the most.
