The 2021 Guide To Gaming Platforms 🎮 🖥️ 📱 ☁️

If you want to become a professional gamer and just starting your journey, start by learning about the various gaming platforms.

Why It’s Important to Know About the Various Gaming Platforms

It’s important to learn about gaming platforms because your gaming gear should be appropriate for your chosen game(s).

The last thing you want to do is spend time playing on your phone when your ultimate goal is to professionally play a PC or a console game.

Additionally, game developers have preferences of their own.

If you’re a streamer and you rely on streaming the latest games ahead of everybody else, learn ahead of time what games are in development and for what platforms, and make sure you’re ready for the launch date.

For example, at the time of this writing, Half-Life: Alyx has just been announced for March 2020. However, the game is VR-exclusive, so without a VR set, you cannot play it.

Make sure you’ve bought your VR set ahead of time and experimented with it for long enough to be ready. Otherwise, a massive opportunity to gain new subscribers will be lost.

Another example includes Death Stranding, one of the most anticipated games of the last few years and the latest title from Kojima Productions.

Initially, the game is only available on PlayStation 4. If you don’t have one, you lose out.

Gaming Platforms Statistics

According to statista.com, a 2019 survey of around 4000 developers revealed that the PC is currently the number one gaming platform.

60%t of those surveyed said they had a lot of interest in this platform and 66% mentioned that they were currently developing a game for PC.

In second place came Nintendo Switch (45% interest rate), followed by PS4/Pro (38%), Smartphones/Tablets (33%), Xbox One/X (28%), VR Headsets (27%), AR Headsets (20%), and Mac (14%).

Developers are clearly focusing on three big categories: PC, Console, and Smartphone/Tablet.

The Main Gaming Platforms

Here’s a brief analysis of the three main gaming platforms:

PC

This is by far the best platform to master and invest in if you’re an aspiring pro gamer. It allows you to do everything you want for a wide variety of games, especially competitive ones.

You can compete professionally in many different esports, you can stream, or you can simply create YouTube content.

Some of the most popular titles for PC are League of Legends, Overwatch, Dota 2, CS:GO, StarCraft 2, Fortnite, PUBG, and many others.

Just about anything you might want to stream or compete in requires you to have a good PC and be a master of the mouse and the keyboard.

Console

Consoles are for people whose main interest lies in sports games or fighting games. If you like FIFA 20 or Mortal Kombat 11, then you should own a console and train your hands and your mind to play using a controller.

The best consoles on the market are Sony PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, and Nintendo Switch.

Smartphone/Tablet

This gaming platform is not ideal for those who want to become pro gamers, because it is limited in what it allows you to do in almost any complex game.

Furthermore, there’s little that can be done with it in the three areas that constitute the main pillars of pro gaming: competing, streaming, and creating content.

Of course, you can still play video games on your Smartphone or Tablet. Don’t expect to become a pro gamer by doing just that, though, as almost everything that has to do with pro gaming is related to consoles and the PC.

What to Consider For A Gaming Platform

When making up your mind about what gaming platforms you should own and train on, your main considerations should be budget, upcoming releases, and long term goals.

Budget

If you’re just starting out, owning a proper PC – one that would allow you to stream, play competitively, and enjoy the latest titles at high details – is an absolute must. But it doesn’t come cheap.

Expect to pay somewhere around $1,500 – $2,000. And that doesn’t include pro gaming gear such as a high-quality mouse, keyboard, and headset.

Ideally, you should own a good PC and a good console such as Sony PlayStation 4 Pro.

Upcoming Releases

If you’re a streamer or content creator, keep on top of upcoming releases. Being among the first to review a game or stream it can offer you great advantages in both of these professions.

Long Term Goals

Consider what your most important goals are when it comes to your career in gaming. If you’re serious about this, make sure that you invest in the necessary gear. Even if you can’t buy everything at once, start with one piece and upgrade over time.
